My name is Brian. When my office was in Quinn Coliseum, I worked with Brian, Brian, Ryan, and Ryan. When I started riding here, I soon met Brian. Then I met Ryan, who also bikes. Then, we started a bike race team and Brian joined up from Hermiston. Later, Brian joined from Baker. I later met Brian from Tri-Cities and said he should join the team because we were only accepting Brians. When I went to a conference a couple years ago, they put me in the same room as Brian. And just last week I was contacted by a friend of mine from graduate school, Bryan. At the Tour of Willamette earlier this year, I was racing again Brian, Brian, Brian, Brian, and Brian, among other people. Thankfully Brian won. Look up 1972 in the dictionary and what name is the most popular listed. No. . . its “Michael,” but “Brian” is 8th.
In La Grande, it’s even worse when combined with the other repeat names. You could say brian, cory, zach, or matt were out riding today and it could mean a seemingly endless combination of potential people.
Last spring, my high school buddy Brian had a new baby, which thankfully he didn’t name Brian. All the time growing up, we used to juke people when they asked us something. I’d answer for him when they said, “Brian . . .” and he’d answer for me, knowing full well they were referring to the other.
A week ago fellow La Grande Brian had a baby. Congrats to him! Good thing it wasn’t a boy or he may have named him junior. So what did I name my kids? Definitely not the most popular ones on the names list. I do have a boy, but the lineage of Brian ended with me. But guess what I named my little girl. . . Dania Brianne.
