Wanna Ride?

This morning Hunter was a one lane highway. This had me parking in snow drifts every time a car approached. One SUV pulled up and rolled down its window and said, “You’re crazy.” I paused and then inadvertently replied, “Yes I am.” This isn’t the first time I’ve been offered a ride recently. A special note to area drivers: While I appreciate the intentions, please don’t roll down your window exposing me to the interior of your cozy, warm-beverage-sipping capsule. I prefer that you keep a physical barrier between your world and mine.

The afternoon had Rad and myself in time trial position on Foothill. As always, The Hill brought the fury with wicked wind and drifting. We took an Etch A Sketch style route up to Gekeler where we were going west into another strong wind. Then, back on Pierce going north a whiteout engulfed us. When the storm cleared we were in a hundred deep peloton of elk. Then, it was a strong headwind. How does that work? Headed south, headwind. . .headed west, headwind. . .headed east, no wind. . .headed north, headwind.

Summerville had some deep, soft snow that made the going rough. Bike part delivery guy was stranded and hiking to find cell phone service. What can I do for brown? Nothing. Still riding. Our road has turned into a parallel parking zone for my neighbors so they aren’t stranded behind a drift and Hunter Rd. Or maybe they have abandoned clearing the snow from their driveway (which I gave up a month ago). By the time I arrived at my house, the snow-shovel-width bike path up to the house was filled in. I noted that the walls were almost getting as tall as me in places. We now just need a little more snow to fall off our roof to completely obscure the view out our windows.

My 1 wheel drive is working well this winter. So far, I’ve got 0 miles on my ass odometer. My feet have some miles though. The 1WD starts up fine in sub zero temperatures, which my 4WD truck had some problems with. I have no problem getting through drifts and shoveling is a lot easier. Fuel consumption costs about the same amount as a hybrid car. Best of all, I can park it in my house and in my office. It is the perfect winter vehicle.
